What Insect Stings Hurt Worse? What Insect Stings Hurt Worse?

What Insect Stings Hurt Worse?

2019-12-30

Stinging insects are the worst. Many of us have a strong negative childhood memory of unexpectedly being stung by a bee or yellow jacket. Although you likely remember this sting as excruciatingly painful, you might be surprised to hear that regular bees and wasps are on the lower end of the insect sting pain scale. Read through the article to learn which insects have the most painful stings in the world, backed by research.

Since pain is relative, how can we determine the most painful sting? Years ago, an entomologist named Justin Schmidt set out to improve this problem by creating a Schmidt Sting Pain Index based on his extensive research. He has been stung by hundreds of species over his career. His index is based on four levels, from least painful to most painful. Aside from this, he describes each sting in great detail to help show how much it truly hurts.

Read below to check out a few insects with the most painful stings.

Insects With the Most Painful Sting (From Worst to Least)

Executioner Wasp

This newly discovered wasp was likely named after its sting. Since it was a new species that hadn’t been analyzed by Justin Schmidt, a wildlife expert named Coyote Peterson followed in Schmidt’s footsteps to seek out the species. He was stung by it and described it as far worse than the Bullet Ant. Not only was it excruciatingly painful, it burned a hole in his arm – no insect had done that to him before. This wasp is located in Central America and South America.

Bullet Ant

Schmidt rated the Bullet Ant at the very top of his list. This ant lives in the South American rainforest and delivers an intense, venomous sting. The immediate pain lasts anywhere from 12–24 hours in full force. Luckily, you won’t find this type of ant hiding in your backyard.

Tarantula Hawk

The Tarantula Hawk is rated a level four on the Schmidt Sting Pain Index as well, right after the Bullet Ant. This species is a large spider wasp that preys on Tarantulas. Eighteen species of Tarantula Hawks can be found in the United States (primarily in the deserts and Southwestern states), as well as throughout other areas of the world. There are 250 species in South America.

Paper Wasp

This common species of wasp often pop up under porch areas during summertime. Their sting is painful (rated a three), but luckily, it starts to fade after about 15 minutes.

Red Harvester Ant

Typically only found in New Mexico and Arizona, these ants are rated a three on the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. The sting can inflame your nerves for hours and is pretty painful. They’re often confused with fire ants due to their physical similarities, but the two aren’t related.

Yellow Jacket Wasp

You might not have recognized the previous insects, but you likely have seen Yellow Jackets flying around your home in summertime. Perhaps you’ve even been stung by one! Although their sting is definitely painful, Schmidt rated it as a level two on his scale. Most other bees, wasps, and ants are in the level two category of pain.

Bald-Faced Hornet

These large, aggressive hornets are found throughout the United States and other parts of North America. They will sting if their nest area is invaded, and can even spray venom into their victims’ eyes. It was rated a pain level two.

Southern Fire Ants

Fire Ants are fairly low on the pain scale (level one), but this only considers one fire ant bite. Often times, people will stumble upon a nest and anger multiple fire ants, which multiplies the pain when they all decide to sting you. This is why some people believe fire ants have the most painful sting!

Have a Stinging Insect Problem?

Regular insect infestations are terrible enough, but dealing with stinging or biting insects induces another level of frustration. Although yellow jackets or bumblebees may not be the most painful on the insect sting pain index, they definitely hurt. If you have a problem with stinging insects in your home (or around your home), Aptive Environmental can help you get rid of them! Our child-friendly and pet-friendly pest control solutions ensure the insect problem is gone for good. We’re so confident in our services that, if the pest comes back, we will come back too – for free!

Do Stink Bugs Stink?

Do Stink Bugs Stink?

2020-01-01

Stink bugs are native to China, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea – they were first discovered in the United States around 20 years ago, where it was accidentally brought over. They are now found throughout nearly every state. They feed on hundreds of species of plants, including many agricultural crops (they’re definitely not a beneficial garden pest). Do stink bugs stink? Although they aren’t venomous or poisonous, they do have one form of protection – stink!

Unfortunately, stink bugs live up to their name. The unpleasant odor they produce when threatened or injured helps protect them from predators (similar to skunks). They also evoke this scent to find mates and attract other stink bugs to their location when they find a habitable environment. If you find stink bugs in your house, it’s important to be careful when taking measures to get rid of them.

What Does a Stink Bug Smell Like?

The exact scent of a stink bug is difficult to pinpoint. Their strong odor comparable to herbs and spices (the composition of their odor contains chemicals used in food additives as well as cilantro). The exact smell varies depending on the species and the human – some people can’t even smell stink bugs. Some people state their odor smells similar to skunks.

Stink Bugs in the Home

Stink bugs often come inside the house when it rains or when winter hits. This also depends on the species and the area. In some locations, stink bugs enter homes during summer and fall. They spend winter inside walls, attics, or crawl spaces. They typically come out during spring when they try to leave the building, which is when people often notice them in their home.

Do Stink Bugs Stink When You Kill Them?

Yes. Many homeowners think that stink bugs will stop smelling if they squish them, but this is the worst thing you can do. What happens when you squish a stink bug? They evoke the worst form of their scent when they are killed. Not only does this stink up your home for hours or days, but it can attract even more stink bugs if they smell it.

How Do You Kill a Stink Bug Without Making it Stink?

It’s difficult to kill a stink bug without making them stink. Special traps and bug sprays can eliminate these pests while minimizing the scent, but it’s hard to completely guarantee a scent-free kill. The best way to get rid of them is to wait until they’re near a window or door and sneak up on them, then quickly sweep them outside. They’re usually trying to get outside anyways! Vacuuming them up is easy and usually won’t stink up your home, but it can make the vacuum smell for some time.

How Long Does Stink Bug Smell Last?

The foul scent of a stink bug scent can linger for hours or even days depending on the circumstances. There are many simple remedies to get rid of the scent, such as soaking a cotton ball with lemon or peppermint and leaving it out. You can also try odor-control products available in stores.

Are Stink Bugs Harmful to Humans?

Stink bugs can’t cause physical harm to humans (they don’t bite or sting). However, they can be quite a nuisance with their putrid smell as well as their tendency to destroy both indoor and outdoor plants.

Preventing Stink Bugs

If you seem to have issues with stink bugs in your home or garden, there are a few tips you can follow to keep them away. You should inspect the outside of your home carefully by looking for any cracks around windows or doors (if you find any, they can be sealed with caulk). You should also seal holes around pipes and cables that lead into your home. Make sure attics, crawl space vents, and windows are properly screened.

Tackling Stink Bug Infestations

Have you noticed a strange influx of stink bugs in your home or destroying your garden? If you’ve tried traps and sprays to get rid of them without luck, it might be time to call in a professional. Aptive Environmental provides child-friendly and pet-friendly pest solutions. We ensure the bugs go away and stay away – we’re so confident in our service, we will come back for free if the pest infestation comes back.

Why Does Your Clean House Have Roaches?

Why Does Your Clean House Have Roaches?

2019-10-21

Sometimes, no matter how much you clean, your efforts aren’t enough to keep pest infestations at bay. Cockroaches are one type of pest that will feed on almost anything in a home, and once they’re inside, these bugs can hide and reproduce rapidly within the smallest of cracks and crevices. However, a cockroach infestation doesn’t necessarily point to a dirty home. In the United States, AmericanGerman, and Oriental are the most commonly found species of roaches, and these species will sneak indoors to look for food, water, and shelter.

What Causes Cockroaches in a Clean House?

These pests are drawn toward dark, warm environments with ample food sources. Because roaches eat nearly anything, this makes rooms like your kitchen, basement, attic, and even bathroom vulnerable to a roach infestation. As well as being visually unappealing, a roach infestation can pose a threat to you and your family’s health. Cockroaches often carry diseases, like salmonella and gastroenteritis, which can then be transmitted to humans through contaminated food. The following factors are some of the most common reasons why a clean home gets infested by roaches.

Dark, moist areas

Cockroaches love humidity, and compact, damp areas of your home are no exception. If you’ve ever noticed roaches crawling around your bathtub or bathroom sink, it’s because rooms like these are often the perfect breeding ground for roaches. These pests will congregate near any amount of standing water, so if you notice several roaches near your kitchen sink or washing machine, it may be a sign you have a leaky pipe that’s collecting water.

Piles of packing supplies

A cockroach’s diet can include anything from leather and hair to glue and cardboard. This means areas that are cluttered with moving boxes and old belongings, like an attic or basement, are easy targets for cockroaches searching for shelter. Because these areas also attract other pests, it’s best to keep storage areas in your home as tidy and free of debris as possible.

Stored food and leftover crumbs

Unfortunately, the versatile diet of cockroaches also includes human food. These pests will snack on sugary foods and starches, as well as any meat products they can gain access to. Roaches often seek shelter in dark pantries and underneath kitchen appliances, like the refrigerator and sink, because of the easily accessible food found in these areas.

Untidy landscaping

Like other common household pests, specifically mice and spiders, roaches love hiding in unkempt flower beds and overgrown bushes. Any standing water left from a thunderstorm will draw these pests toward overgrown greenery, and piles of wood will provide plenty of food and shelter for these insects to live and reproduce.

The regional climate

Homeowners in the southern United States, where the climate is warmer and more humid year-round, are more likely to attract large amounts of roaches. This may only amount to a few American cockroaches crawling in through your windows or doors, but it’s still important to remove these bugs as soon as you spot them because of the short time these pests can reproduce. If a female cockroach manages to drop a single egg capsule while crawling through your home, you could be housing up to 16 baby roaches within a month.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches

It’s no secret that cockroaches are one of the toughest bugs to exterminate. These pests are immune to most pesticides and at-home pest control treatments, and often require a professional for a full extermination. There are a few tricks you can try, however, before giving a professional a call.

Glue strips

Because these pests are highly attracted to glue, placing several glue strips near infected areas will draw these bugs out of small crevices and trap them. This process can take several days to multiple weeks, so this is recommended only if the infestation is minor.

Caulking

If there’s one thing more important than killing the roaches already living inside your home, it’s preventing any more from getting in. Use caulking to fill any cracks or holes in your walls and baseboards to deter these pests from sneaking through. This can also be a helpful measure for protecting your home against the winter chill.

Boric acid powder

While it can be dangerous if misused, boric acid is one of the most effective roach-killers available. To properly use this chemical, spread the powder on surfaces close to the affected areas. The acid will cling to the roaches’ bodies when they walk across it, and when they clean themselves, they will ingest the toxic powder and die. Unfortunately, using too much boric acid can impact the effectiveness of the method. Spreading a very thin layer in the most highly-infested areas will make your efforts as successful as possible, and hopefully rid your home of any of these hard-bodied pests.

Maintaining a clean home will decrease your chances of attracting roaches, but sometimes, it’s still not enough. Several factors can cause roaches to inhabit a clean house. If you find yourself tackling a cockroach infestation, call the pest experts at your local Aptive Environmental branch to learn about our eco-friendly, pet-friendly pest control treatment plans.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in the Kitchen

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in the Kitchen

2020-01-06

Fruit flies in the house are incredibly annoying. Sometimes, you have no idea why they’re inside and why they aren’t going away. Although they’re not as gross as some other kitchen insects like cockroaches, they’re still a nuisance that nobody wants in their home. They reproduce like crazy and can live anywhere from a couple weeks to months!

What Attracts Fruit Flies?

The first step to take when getting rid of fruit flies is targeting exactly what they’re attracted to in your home. Often times, they will disappear once you get rid of this source. Ultimately, fruit flies love fermenting fruits and vegetables the most. However, they can also be attracted to waste and damp environments like the garbage disposal. Can’t find the source? Perhaps there is an old banana peel that fell behind a trash can, or a hidden candy wrapper that the kids stuffed into the couch.

The good news is that fruit flies reproduce inside of these fruits, so it’s usually easy to find the source of the problem.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in the Kitchen

Have you ever seen one fruit fly, only to find 100 more the following day? Fruit flies reproduce extremely quickly and can lay up to 500 eggs at one time. These eggs hatch within just 24–30 hours, and become fully grown within days. This is why it’s important to get rid of fruit flies as soon as you spot them before it turns into a major problem.

Get Rid of the Source

If fruit flies have no home, they won’t be able to reproduce and multiply by the hundreds. This is why it’s important to get rid of any fermenting fruit or vegetables right away, and clean all countertops very thoroughly.

Fruit Fly Traps

There are a large variety of inexpensive fruit fly traps that work great. In addition, there are plenty of DIY traps you can make by searching online.

Bug Spray

Although bug sprays can be difficult to completely eliminate all fruit flies, it’s a great way to take out a big chunk of them. We recommend using this in combination with other methods.

Natural Methods

Some herbs have been shown to get rid of fruit flies. These include basil, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, clove, and lemongrass. Camphor works as well, but you need to be cautious. You can simply place these herbs into sacks and hang them throughout the house. In addition, you can sprinkle these essential oils around the fruit flies.

Prevention

Prevention is the best way to avoid fruit fly problems in the future. Make sure to store any leftover or aging produce in an air-tight container (perhaps even in the fridge to be extra safe). Keep your counters clean and deal with any bad odors immediately, as these can attract fruit flies. In addition, make sure to keep putting out traps for a couple weeks after you’ve gotten rid of the fruit flies. Eggs can continue to hatch, then the problem can start all over again if you don’t continue prevention methods.

Other Kitchen Bugs & Pests

Ants

Once they’re inside your home, ants can be even more difficult to get rid of when compared with fruit flies. Plus, they have 6x more odor sensors than fruit flies, so ants can often find sweets better than fruit flies. They are attracted to even the smallest crumbs to bring back to their queen.

Pantry Insects

There are some pantry pests that feast only on dry foods like grains and flours. These include weevils, grain beetles, and Indianmeal moths. These are most commonly introduced to the home because of infested food products that are brought.

Cockroaches

For most people, cockroaches would be the worst case scenario when it comes to a bug infestation. They can become very large, multiply quickly, and are associated with dirty homes (even though they can be found in clean houses as well). Overall, they aren’t pleasing to have in your home. Roaches are often found in kitchens, but they can be found in other areas of the home as well because they will eat anything.

Rodents

Another worst-case infestation for most homeowners would be a rodent infestation. For example, mice can infest homes when looking for food and shelter. Rats are less common, but can be found inside homes that are near their habitats.

Do You Need Pest Control in the Winter?

Do You Need Pest Control in the Winter?

2020-01-08

Pest control is a successful way that millions of people reduce bugs in their homes or businesses. It’s common to use pest services during warm months, but many think pest control isn’t necessary during the winter. While it’s easy to assume that all bugs disappear when it gets cold, this simply isn’t true. Many people actually notice an increase of household bugs during the winter seasons, or experience bugs hibernating in their homes until spring.

This article will share more on the subject, including what winter insects to watch out for and who should utilize pest control during these months.

Winter Insects

Before we get deeper into pest control, let’s start with a brief introduction to pests in the winter. Many people assume all bugs die off in the winter, but this isn’t true for plenty of species. Many of them actually go into a form of hibernation, called overwintering. Some will do this in soil or under rocks, while others choose to crawl into homes for protection.

Most of the winter insects that take refuge in buildings will remain dormant until spring, when they start becoming active. So, even if you don’t use winter pest control and don’t see bugs inside your house during winter, they could likely be hiding until it gets warmer.

The particular types of winter insects to watch out for depends on your location and other factors. For example, firewood and Christmas Trees can easily bring in unwanted insects. A few other common winter insects include stink bugs, Asian ladybugs, various spiders, cluster flies, boxelder bugs, and more.

How Often Should Pest Control Be Done?

Ultimately, the goal of pest control is to keep bugs from entering your home to avoid infestations. Missing your regular pest control in the winter can be risky because it creates opportunity for bugs to easily crawl inside, potentially creating an infestation.

Pest control treatments should be applied regularly depending on your needs. This helps keep pests away and avoid infestations (which will cost much more than routine pest control). However, some homes may need it more or less often depending on a variety of factors. Pest control in the winter is definitely important for most homes and businesses.

Who Needs Winter Pest Control?

Some homes and businesses will be more prone to pest infestations, so pest control during the winter will be more important. So, what types of buildings should use pest control during cold months?

Homes That Are More Prone to Pests

Some homes and areas are more prone to insects. The more bugs you see during the warm seasons, the more you will find inside during winter. Similar to when it rains, many bugs like to migrate to homes and businesses when it starts to get cold. They may also be more attracted to your home because of pet food left out, damp areas in the home, or dirty garbage cans. Even the cleanest houses can attract bugs like cockroaches.

The type of home also plays a factor. When comparing a cabin in the forest with a duplex in the suburbs, it’s easy to guess which home has more pest problems. The duplex might survive fine without winter pest control, but the cabin in the woods is another story. It could easily attract spiders, mice, mosquitoes, raccoons, skunks, pantry pests, and many others. Even if you appreciate your beneficial garden pests, you probably don’t appreciate when you find them crawling around your house.

Should You Hire a Professional?

Overall, we absolutely recommend hiring a professional when it comes to applying these potentially harmful pesticides. There is a reason Aptive Environmental pest experts have extensive training – it can be dangerous to apply pesticides without the proper knowledge. Our pesticides are applied safely to protect children, pets, and everyone else. To top it off, we make sure our pesticide applications are friendly to the environment.

If you have an infestation, give your local Aptive Environmental a call for eco-friendly pest control and take advantage of our Four Seasons Protection Program to keep your home pest-free all year long

Why Do Pill Bugs Roll Up?

Why Do Pill Bugs Roll Up?

2020-01-13

Do you remember discovering rollie pollie bugs while playing in the yard as a kid? These dark bugs definitely live up to their nickname – they roll up into a ball for protection whenever they feel threatened. They are like tiny armadillos. As fun as they may be for kids, they can become a nuisance if they decide to adopt your home. Keep reading to learn more about pill bugs and how to get rid of them if you’re finding one too many exploring your house.

What Are Pill Bugs

Pill bugs have six pairs of legs and two pairs of antennae. Most noticeably, they boast hard plates along their back and have the tendency to roll up into a ball when threatened. Their hard exoskeleton protects them from predators.

Interestingly, pill bugs are actually crustaceans that breathe through gills. They’re more similar to shrimp than insects! Unlike other crustaceans, a rollie pollie bug can spend the entirety of its life on land. However, they require damp or wet environments to survive. They can often be found under flower pots, rocks, mulch, damp grass, and around decaying vegetation. Depending on the region, pill bugs may also be called sowbugs or woodlice.

Are Pill Bugs Dangerous?

In general, pill bugs are usually one of the good guys. These beneficial garden insects typically produce compost and overturn soil. They rid soil of heavy metal ions by taking copper, zinc, lead, arsenic, and cadmium. They crystalize these metals in their midgut – most other species can’t survive in contaminated soil like pill bugs can.

However, they occasionally feed on young plants if they can’t find other food (this damage is typically minimal since they prefer to feed on organic decaying matter, even their own feces). Pill bugs can also be a nuisance if they move into your home (more on this below).

They don’t sting or bite humans, and they don’t spread diseases. They’re completely safe for the kids to play with!

Other Bugs That Roll Up

There are about fifteen types of pill bugs, but the most common is formally known as Armadillidium vulgare. Aside from pill bugs, there are a few other insect species that roll up into a ball to protect themselves. These include pill millipedes, Namib spiders, corn ear worms, and cutworms.

Getting Rid of Pill Bugs

If you’re repeatedly finding pill bugs in your home or business, there is likely a large population of them living and breeding near the building foundation. They typically use door seal cracks to enter homes. However, they typically dry out and die inside unless they find a damp basement to survive in. They need water to live. If they show up in your home or business often, this could signal an issue with dampness somewhere inside. This could also mean there are entry points that need to be sealed.

Pill bugs aren’t a pantry pest – if they manage to survive inside, they will be hiding in potentially moist areas such as basements, crawl spaces, or indoor plants.

Prevention

The key to controlling pill bugs is to take preventative measures. Make sure to seal any cracks in doors or the home’s foundation, control humidity in basements and crawl spaces. and keep landscape around your home dry. Once you get rid of their source of moisture, they will disappear.

Exterminating Pill Bugs

Often times, you will need a professional to help exterminate pill bugs when there is an infestation that doesn’t go away. Almost always, there are entry points or sources of moisture in the building that you simply can’t find. Aptive Environmental makes sure to find the source of the problem and eliminate it! Worried they might come back? We are so confident in our services that we will come back for free if the bug does.

What Attracts Ants to Your Home?

What Attracts Ants to Your Home?

2020-01-20

Ants can be quite a nuisance. Often times, homeowners aren’t able to find the source of an ant infestation and spend ages trying to get rid of them. Even just one or two in the home can signal a nest of thousands nearby. That said, keep reading to learn more about what attracts ants, how to prevent them, and how you can get rid of them for good if you’re experiencing an infestation.

What Attracts Ants?

If you’re finding ants marching around your home, it can be hard to target what they are attracted to (or perhaps they have simply found shelter in the house).

Food

Accessible food is the most common source. With 400+ odor receptors, ants have an incredible sense of smell considering how small they are. What food attracts ants? This depends on the species, but most are attracted to sugar and grease. Often times, forgotten food spills or hidden messes will attract them. Additionally, ants can easily smell food that isn’t securely stored in a container or inside the fridge.

Although ants don’t fall into the pantry pest extermination category, they are sometimes also attracted to dry foods such as flour or grains if they’re not securely stored.

Water

What causes ants in the house aside from food? Excess moisture is another factor that could be attracting ants. If there are ants in your bathroom, water is typically the cause. Carpenter ants, for example, build nests under bathroom sinks and tiles since they hold the most moisture. If you’re finding ants, there could be a leak – check near toilets, sinks, and tubs for any leaks. If you’ve searched high and low for foods in the kitchen, they could be attracted to water.

Preventing Ants in Home

Kitchen

To prevent kitchen ants, cleanliness is most important. Make sure to clean countertops and floors regularly with soap (water alone may not completely eradicate scents that attract ants). Clean up any spills as quickly as possible, especially spills that are sugary or greasy. Pay extra close attention to small spaces or cracks that food could fall into, as well as children that may be sneakily hiding food around the home.

Additionally, make sure to clean indoor garbage cans and empty them out daily. Place perishable food inside a bag before throwing into the trash, and keep any outside trash cans away from the entrance of your house.

Bathroom

To prevent ants in your bathroom, make sure to thoroughly clean your bathroom to remove any standing pools of water. Also, scrub the floors and inside of drawers with a cleaner. Along with the bathroom, the kitchen sink may also provide ants with needed water. Try to keep the kitchen sink and nearby areas free of standing water.

Getting Rid of Ants

In some unfortunate circumstances, ants may have decided to make a nest in your home walls or other areas. This is a less common occurrence, but it happens. In this case, you often need a professional as you can’t reach the source of the problem with regular bug sprays and other products. Some species are more likely to nest in your home (for example, pavement ant infestation is common because they often live in home foundations).

If you already have an infestation, there are a few ways you can go about getting rid of ants. Often times, you can pinpoint what they are attracted to because they huddle around it. For example, if you dropped a piece of pie next to the fridge, they will likely leave once you remove their source of food. If you can’t find the exact source, try following all of the prevention measures listed previously. Perform a deep clean of your kitchen to remove any old spills and crumbs. If this doesn’t work, search the home for any standing water and fix this if you find any.

However, sometimes you’ll find stubborn ants that have created a nest in your home or are using your home for shelter. This usually requires a professional to perform a full ant extermination, but you can try over-the-counter products to get rid of ants. Ant traps can be successful, as well as some repellants. Overall, a professional like Aptive Environmental will be able to target the source of the problem and quickly eliminate it. We focus on eliminating the current infestation as well as future infestations. If the bugs come back, we will too (for free)!

What to Look For When Hiring a Pest Control Company

What to Look For When Hiring a Pest Control Company

2020-01-22

When hiring a professional exterminator, there are plenty of options on the market. If you’re new to pest services, you might wonder what the difference is and what you should look for when picking a company. Should you hire a small local exterminator? A large chain? This article provides you with the information you need to pick the perfect professional pest control company.

What Services Do Professional Exterminators Offer?

The first step when hiring a professional exterminator is to make sure they offer services for the type of insect you need. Some companies specialize in certain bugs or pests, so it may save you some time to check beforehand. If you have a unique circumstance such as a snail infestation or a black widow infestation.

In addition, you’ll need to check and see if they offer both residential extermination and commercial extermination pest services. Some companies only offer one type.

Small vs. Large Professional Pest Control Company

It can be hard to determine whether to go with a small, local professional exterminator or a larger company. With a larger company, you often get guarantees and large amounts of experience. Everyone professional exterminator within the company is extensively trained – at Aptive, we only source the best employees who are truly passionate about what they do.

With a small business, however, you’re able to support the local economy and perhaps even people you know. The decision is completely up to you (just make sure they know what they’re doing and have good reviews)! Above everything else, make sure the employees are properly certified and trained.

Experience & Reviews

It’s a relief to discover the company you’re looking to hire has a large background in their field. For example, we have been around for years and have offices in nearly every US state. We have had enough time to set our systems in place and make sure the job is done right, every time.

Similarly, always make sure to check reviews to see what others have to say about the company.

Knowledgeable

Not only should you rely on your pest control company to be there when you have an infestation, but they should be your go-to source for knowledge as well! A blog is one great way to determine if your company is knowledgeable in their field. Make sure they post knowledgeable, informal posts. Although a company without a blog may just be a little behind in technology, it’s always a great bonus to receive up-to-date articles and alerts.

It’s also important to speak with employees and make sure they know what they’re talking about. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Free Quote

It’s always shady when a professional pest control company doesn’t offer a free quote or even give you average pricing ranges on an initial phone call. Often times, these companies will state that they can’t quote you on the phone without inspecting your home first. Then, they rush you to book an in-person appointment so you don’t compare them with their competition. They will inspect your home, then give you an overpriced quote or sell you services you don’t really need.

Aptive Environmental always offers free quotes.

Guarantee

Few pest companies stand behind their services the way we do. We are so confident that we will do an amazing job, that we will come back for free if the bugs come back. Just one service with Aptive becomes a life-long relationship, at no extra cost! When you hire an exterminator, a guarantee like this can make a huge difference.

Bonus Perks

Although you may not be looking selectively for certain perks, it’s always nice to have bonuses. For example, Aptive Environmental pest solutions are eco-friendly, meaning they are friendly to the environment. As mentioned earlier, it’s great when pest companies also share blog posts and other sources of pest-related information for home and business owners. There are hundreds of useful topics to cover!

Are Centipedes Venomous?

Are Centipedes Venomous?

2020-01-27

If you thought spiders have a lot of legs, you’ll be blown away by centipedes! These crawlers can have anywhere from fifteen to nearly 200 legs (depending on the species and size). Their size can range anywhere from 4mm to 6 inches long. Some can get even longer – many centipedes in Hawaii grow to be eight inches long and almost half an inch wide. They can easily climb on floors, walls, and most other surfaces.

People tend to be terrified of them because of their large number of legs and quick speed. Are centipedes dangerous though? Keep reading to learn if they can harm you and how to get rid of them in your home.

Are Centipedes Dangerous?

Although they can bite humans, centipede venom isn’t strong enough to cause harm. They also rarely bite unless they are threatened. It can be pretty painful when they do bite (the larger the centipede, the more painful the bite will be). The only circumstance where a centipede bite could be dangerous is when someone is allergic to the venom.

Are house centipedes venomous?

Centipedes found in the house are venomous as well, but still harmless unless you’re allergic. However, a house centipede can actually be a good thing if you have issues with other insects. They hunt roaches, moths, silverfish, termites, and many other bugs. You definitely don’t want a centipede infestation, but just one centipede can get rid of other bug issues you may have.

Centipedes vs. Millipedes

Many people have difficulties telling the difference between centipedes and millipedes since they are fairly similar looking (even their names sound the same). However, there are a few differences between the two. For one, their diet is very different – centipedes are carnivorous, while millipedes feed on decaying organic matter or roots and leaves of seedling plants. Because of this, centipedes have venom that kills their prey.

In addition, their legs are spread out differently. Since centipedes need to chase prey, their legs are longer and help them run faster. Millipedes have shorter legs and they are much slower. Centipedes have one pair of legs on each body segment, while millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment. Millipedes are typically smaller than centipedes. When performing millipede extermination, slightly different measures may be taken since they bite.

Keeping Centipedes Out of Your Home

Although typically harmless, most don’t want these creepy crawlers in their house and squish them. However, killing them can be bad because centipedes usually come inside homes only when there are other insects to eat. You might be scared of centipedes, but their presence could be a sign you have an entirely different insect infestation on your hands. The most effective way to get rid of centipedes in the home is to get rid of their food source (other bugs).

One way to help with this is to seal off any cracks or other holes that insects can use to get inside your home. Additionally, use a dehumidifier or install a bathroom fan to eliminate extra moisture in the walls that attracts insects. You might need to take further measures if you have an actual infestation.

Professional Pest Control

If you have bug problems that you can’t eliminate on your own, professional pest control will likely be needed. Aptive Environmental offers centipede extermination as well as other bug extermination (cockroach exterminationsilverfish extermination, and many more) that will eliminate the bugs centipedes are attracted to. Our services are safe and environmentally friendly. We are so confident in our expertise, we will come back for free if the bugs come back!

What to Do After a Wasp Sting?

What to Do After a Wasp Sting?

2020-01-29

Wasps are a common stinging insect that can be found during warm months. These yellow and black flying, stinging bugs create nests both above the ground as well as on the ground. They often use tree branches, porch ceilings, deck floors, rafters, eaves, and railings to build their nest. Wasps use nectar as a food source as well as other insects such as caterpillars, larvae, and flies.

Their stinger contains venom that paralyzes their prey. Unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times. They aren’t naturally aggressive toward humans, but will sting if their nest is disturbed or if they are swatted at. Keep reading to learn how to treat a wasp sting, when they can be dangerous, and how to get rid of infestations or nests near the house.

Are Wasp Stings Dangerous?

Although wasp stings are painful, most people recover easily and quickly. They are only dangerous if you’re severely allergic. The most severe wasp sting reaction can result in anaphylaxis, which is when your body goes into shock because of the wasp venom. People with severe reactions may also experience swelling in the face or throat, hives on the body, dizziness, drop in blood pressure, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and more. These severe reactions are rare. If you have a history of anaphylaxis, make sure to carry an emergency kit in case a sting occurs.

What happens when a wasp stings you if you’re not allergic? You will simply experience a raised welt around the sting area with a white dot in the middle where their stinger came into contact with your skin. The pain and swelling will typically go away within a few hours of the sting.

How to Treat a Wasp Sting

If you’re not allergic and have a normal reaction to the sting, you can easily treat them at home. First wash the area with soap and water to remove venom, then applying a cold pack to the wound to reduce swelling and pain. After this, keep the wound clean and dry to prevent an infection (you can use a bandage if you’d like).

In addition, there are a few home remedies that can help reduce pain and swelling more quickly. Some say crushing a clove of garlic and spreading it on the wound helps reduce pain for both bee and wasp stings.

What Attracts Wasp Infestations?

Wasps are often attracted to areas near the home that they’re able to hang their nest from. These include porch ceilings, eaves, and deck railings. Many wasps use the fiber from wood to build their nests, so this will attract them even further. They will be even more attracted to your home if you have a yard with plenty of insects and nectar to eat (such as fruit trees and plants) as well as indoor shelter for the cold months (barns, sheds, and others).

Nests around your home can be dangerous if located near areas with a lot of human traffic, especially children that may have a wasp sting reaction. They tend to sting when people come too close to their nest. Luckily, there are a few ways to control wasps.

Although it’s safer to hire professionals when performing stinger and biter extermination, there are general measures you can take to try and eliminate them. First, you should seal any cracks that can provide an entry into your home. Additionally, make sure to clean up any fruit trees or plants around your home because they love to eat fallen fruit. Finally, make sure to keep outside garbage in a tightly sealed garbage can.

If these simple fixes don’t help, professional wasp extermination is the way to go. It can be dangerous to try and eliminate wasps without proper training. Aptive Environmental has offices all over the United States and is dedicated to providing safe, eco-friendly pest services. We are so confident in our services, we will come back for free if the bugs come back!
