Not so long ago, most people viewed the hallmarks of success as something along the lines of a house, a white picket fence, two weeks vacation, two children and the ability to send those kids to college. Today, the middle class is a vanishing breed according to nearly every survey and statistic on the topic. Its disappearance is of such grave concern to the fabric of American society that the U.S. government launched a task force to explore the issue. Despite all of the attention to the subject, defining “middle class” remains a challenge, as everyone wants to be in the middle regardless of their income. Instead of focusing on the dollars, let’s take a look at the lifestyle benchmarks that define middle class status.
Have You Made it to the Middle?
A wide variety of numbers have been thrown around in an effort to define the middle. People earning 20% of the average income and people earning 80% all claim to be part of the middle class. More than a few millionaires make the claim too. While there is no official financial standard, the middle class as defined by the government task force is characterized in terms of six financial aspirations, which we can view as benchmarks.
- Home Ownership
Home ownership remains the American dream. The step up from renting to owning signifies prosperity and achievement. With median home prices ranges differing by so much in different cities across the United States, the ability to achieve this goal varies significantly by geographical location. Someone earning an income in the 50% range in Detroit may not be able to afford even a small house in Los Angeles.
- Automobile Ownership
Owning an automobile provides freedom of movement and the luxury of avoiding the limited schedules and cramped quarters offered by mass transportation options such as buses and subways. Here again, the cost of cars varying widely, as does the kind of automobile required. For one driver, a used Hyundai will do the trick. For another, a new BMW signifies the achievement of this goal.
- A College Education for the Kids
Helping children get ahead in life is a primary goal for middle class families. Paying for a college education for children can cost anywhere from the low tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands. Decisions about which university of college to attend can have a significant impact on the price tag.
- Retirement Security
Retirement is a goal nearly everyone wants to achieve. It demonstrates success and provides a reward for decades of hard work. Once again, definitions make a difference. The amount of gold required to support your golden years will vary significantly depending on whether you want a staff of 10 at your villa in the South of France or a townhouse in Peoria, Illinois.
- Health Care Coverage
The ability to obtain healthcare is an important goal for middle class wager earners and their families. The high and rising cost of medical care and prescription drugs make healthcare coverage an ever-increasing need, as going without it can have serious negative financial implications in the event of a severe illness or injury.
- Family Vacation
The family vacation is a middle class staple. Vacations demonstrate that a family has disposable income and has been successful enough to take time away from work to focus on leisure.
What Happened on the Way to the Dream?
Globalization and technological advances began to reverse the growth of the middle class. The manufacturing base in the United States changed, as good-paying jobs in factories and heavy industries went overseas to lower-paying markets and labor unions lost much of their ability to bargain for high wages and good benefits. Later, white-collar jobs from accounting and data entry to reading medical images and answering telephones in call centers were also sent offshore. Many jobs that remained in the U.S. were eliminated by computers and other technological advancements that increased productivity.
To achieve or maintain a middle-class lifestyle, many households became two-income families. Achieving middle class goals became more difficult as employers eliminated their pension plans and defined-benefit plans, the cost of a college education continued to rise and the cost of healthcare jumped. For most of the 20-year period following 1990, the Commerce Department reports that real median income grew at a rate of about 20%, while the cost of a college education grew between 43% and 60%, the cost of housing rose 56% and healthcare costs jumped by 155%.
How to Get There
Although there are significant challenges to obtaining middle class status, there are some proactive steps that can help make the dream a reality. Budgeting is one of the most obvious. Understanding where your money goes each month can help you determine the exact makeup of the benchmarks you are trying to match. Are you looking for a Hyundai or a BMW?
Planning is another crucial step. Are the kids going to a state university or a private college? Are scholarships an option? Some savvy families find money for college by participating in programs which can aide families with the costs related to sending a child to university.
Working is another one of the requirements. A second job or a side business might be just what you need to boost your income and achieve some of your goals. Putting your money to work is also an important consideration. Investing has helped build wealth for generations. In fact, income earners ranked in the top 1% enjoyed significant increases in wealth even as the middle class fell into decline. Most of that wealth came from investments. Even if you don’t have the means to invest for current income, you can take a few dollars from each paycheck and save for your retirement.
The Bottom Line
Don’t underestimate the role of hard work and luck. Sometimes being in the right place at the right time or taking one particular course of action over another can make all the difference. So keep watching for opportunities and make the most of them when you find them. As motion-picture mogul Samuel Goldwyn said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

Author’s program note. We Americans are at our best when we have identified a pressing problem, then set about the task of solving it, no matter how difficult. Right now, the problem is terrorism… what it is, how it works, the people who perpetrate the outrages… and what we as a nation and as individuals and potential victims must do to ensure that they are stopped dead… and never be allowed to practice their malicious craft ever again, against anyone, anywhere.
You might think such a high and strenuous goal is just too difficult, indeed that it is beyond the capacities of mere mortals. But you’d be wrong. Terrorism is manmade and as such it can be minimized, curtailed, and through assiduous, unflagging effort wiped out by man. A man like Joe Friday.
“Just the facts, ma’am.”
Joe Friday is arguably the nation’s best known cop. He was created and played by American actor, television producer, and writer Jack Webb (1920-1982) on “Dragnet”. The series first ran on radio (1949-1956) and television (1951-1959) and again in 1967-1970. There was also a theatrical film (1954) and a TV-movie (1969).
Why was this show with its unmistakable opening of blunt words and blunter music so popular? Because it dealt with real people (“the names have been changed to protect the innocent”) and solved real crimes. Jack Webb was so perfect in his role that when he died in 1982 he was buried with full police honors, a rarity for someone who was not a policeman.
Friday was all about getting down to business, identifying problems, brainstorming solutions and using the incomparable Yankee brain power to defeat the wicked. He was thorough, indefatigable, high minded, and honest. In other words, he had what was required for success, including the absolutely necessary skill of being willing to grow, listen to others, and work together for the common good. He was never a show-off with a “hey, look at me” mentality.
This is the kind of person we need at the front lines of our great war against terrorism, for this unadulterated cruelty knows no barriers, no limits, and absolutely no humanity at all. It is the very definition of evil and must be treated as such. Its perpetrators are pernicious vermin, and deserve neither charity nor forgiveness, for they give none to anyone. Sadly, we are not yet fully equipped to deal with this mobile menace of ingenuity and increasing expertise and sophistication. And the extent to which we are disorganized, inefficient and disarranged is the very measure of our danger and risk.
“Russia alerted US repeatedly about suspect….”
The headline in The Boston Globe of Wednesday April 24, 2013 was sickening, alarming, enraging. Here’s why:
“Russian authorities contacted the US government with concerns about Tamerlan Tsarnaev not once but ‘multiple times,’ including an alert it sent after he was first investigated by FBI agents in Boston, raising new questions about whether the FBI should have paid more attention to the suspected Boston Marathon bomber…”
What’s worse, this is just the tip of the ice-berg on intelligence and overall communications break-downs. The agencies on which we spend billions and billions of dollars are, day by day, shown to resemble the Keystone Cops, to the extent that with the Boston Marathon case we may be seeing the development of the greatest intelligence failure and scandal in the entire history of the Great Republic. And remember this; when intelligence agencies fail, people die… regular ordinary people, including a disproportionate number of children and young people. Indeed the word “scandal” is not remotely satisfactory to label this botched mess showcasing one problem after another that makes them anything other than intelligent. This is a crisis of the first magnitude.
You can bet your bottom dollar that the Solons of the capital are and will be tripping over each other to identify and solve such problems; that is until something easier and less demanding arises. Thus, Solon or not, I have something to say on these matters. And Joe-Friday-like I intend to make my comments and recommendations, terse, pointed, and do-able.
“C’est la guerre.”
In 1953 a brilliant historian named Cecil Woodham-Smith wrote a brilliant book which ought to be required reading for anyone connected with the war business, which is a veritable army of people as General and President Dwight David Eisenhower once memorably reminded us. Its title is “The Reason Why” on the famous charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War (1853-1856) when the best cavalry on Earth rode directly into the unremitting and pitiless cannons of the Tsar. “C’est magnifique” said the French commander Pierre Bosquet, “mais c’est pas la guerre.”
It was one of the greatest blunders ever and it was the result of one communications and strategic error after another, as the bleeding remnants of this foul-up confirmed. When you run your “intelligence” departments this way, I remind you: people die.
War must be treated accordingly and never regarded as merely a job. That ensures error.
2) To establish in the minds of service personnel and citizens, the significance of their work give it a name, a name like World War III. Right now terrorism is regarded as a tragedy, to be sure, but one which is episodic, occasional and random; something perpetrated by highly efficient but small cells, mostly fighting under the leadership of extreme (and therefore limited) religious leaders and zealots.
Instead, it needs to be recognized that each supra-national cell regards itself as a sovereign power, not just a faction. Thus, as with the Axis powers in World War II, people with quite different points of view and objectives band together for the sake of victory. Pseudo-sovereigns they may be, yet they ally as nations do, future problems to be resolved later. Thus, to find a single terrorist is to find a useful link to still others. Since these alliances are forever shifting due to constantly changing circumstances, when we discover such links and the people who create and profit from them, we must move swiftly to eradicate the menace, for to wait is to hand them an unnecessary advantage… and thus our people die.
3) Share intelligence, fully and promptly. A war, any war, is far more important than any of the hundreds of thousands of agencies, organizations and personnel it takes to gain victory. Sadly, you’d never know it from the unending “turf wars” waged by bureaucrats and officials who are supposed to be on the same side and work together for the common good.
The Boston Marathon case is a perfect example of what happens when information is hoarded, rather than shared. After having stolen two cars, the suspect Tsarnaev brothers seized the driver of one. They unaccountably let him go but kept his cell phone. When the police “pinged” that cell they got the direct bearings of one, and therefore inadvertently, the two get-away cars. Had this godsend not occurred the brothers might well have slipped out of Massachusetts. Authorities now believe that iconic Times Square in midtown Manhattan was their next target.
The consequences of an incident there defy imagination. It is now clear that lack of sharing information gave the brothers their opportunity to outrage… and that this failure might not have occurred had the sharing of pertinent details been the rule, rather than the exception. When that is the case, innocent people, in the wrong place at the wrong time, die.
4) Unified intelligence. Right now, when coherence, centralization and efficiency of intelligence should be the objective, there are at least five “watch” lists, competing, overlapping, duplicating. These five include Terrorism Identification Datamark Environment (TIDE); Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB); Selectee List; No-Fly List and Disposition Matrix. Each has its own criteria for getting on or getting off a given list. Thus the anomaly arises that a suspect may be on one list, but not on another.
This was the case with Tamerlan Tsarmaev… and as a result people died. Experts must find a way to solve this problem, but I can give them a suggestion to start. Don’t allow self-interested bureaucrats to persuade you that their department is necessary and that their list and information should be kept for them. Instead come up with what should be on ONE list and arrange matters accordingly.
5) Test the system. Then re-test. Every human system and enterprise is subject to human error and so is this one. Only here there is this major difference: when errors occur, people die. That is why there must be constant, thorough and thoughtful testing of every aspect of this system. There must be no “sacred cows”, but only people who need cutting-edge tools and intelligence and are willing to do the necessary to get them… for you see when our side offers responses which are sluggish, outmoded and inadequate, people die. Thus, we must test, review test results, and improve. There must be no question about this, and no one’s interests must be allowed to trump the ongoing training and perfecting.
Last Words… for now.
As a citizen of Cambridge, Massachusetts I watched in horror and disbelief as these events took place in my very neighborhood. It is not too much to say that they changed me forever. Thus, I tell you this. In World War II and our other conventional wars, we could mark victories and defeats with pins on a map. “Roumania allies with Axis,” then “Roumania surrenders.” You knew where you were and what was happening.
That is not the case with terrorists.
When the discussion focuses on terrorism, the focus must be on what hasn’t happened. It is not just that such silence is golden but that with each day that goes by we are successfully meeting the unending challenge of terrorism and the villains who use it to humiliate, humble, frighten, and cow us. To keep outrages to the absolute minimum we must understand that this war has no end, no boundaries, no flags flying marching garlanded through the streets of even the smallest hamlet. No indeed. This war demands constant, unflagging effort. Otherwise, good people will die and our great national purposes be obliterated and defeated by a few… to the lasting detriment of the many. That is why defeat in this war of stealth and subterfuge is unthinkable and why we must work together Joe Friday-like, for only therein is victory and the peaceful and harmonious life we all want so very much but can so easily lose in an instant, mayhem we might have stopped… but didn’t
George Kosch, CEO and Co-Founder of Worldprofit Inc, discusses his reflections over the last two years as CEO and his thoughts on the future of the company.
Interviewer: I understand that Worldprofit, now in it’s 23rd year of business recently underwent some major changes?
George: Yes, Sandi Hunter and myself are the original co-founders of Worldprofit. Recently the two of us, took over 100% of the control, operations and ownership of the company. Sandi Hunter has served as President since the company’s inception in 1994 and she continues in that capacity. Myself, well two years ago, I transitioned into the role of CEO following the retirement of the former CEO. I continue to be actively involved with all aspects of training as well as integration of new technologies for the benefit of our Members, but I have taken over more of a leadership role in terms of innovative growth and direction of the company. Sandi and I are proud of the company we’ve built together and are planning for a strong future in an industry that is growing in leaps and bounds.
Interviewer: What are your reflections on the last 2 years in your position of CEO?
George: In a word, it’s been “exhilarating!” We introduced a number of new advertising services to meet the needs of our current Members and to attract new customers unfamiliar with our brand. We cater to the online business community to service the needs of affiliate marketers and home based business owners and entrepreneurs. When we first started Worldprofit in 1994, Amazon didn’t exist, in fact, 99% of the affiliate marketing companies today didn’t exist. Affiliate marketing was not a common term at that time, nor an accepted method of earning online. Worldprofit was the first company to successfully offer affiliate marketing within a Membership platform, and it’s the model our company still operates within today. We called it a Dealership but the principle was the same. Refer others to our company and when a sale is made we pay commission to our Members worldwide. Today, thousands and thousands of companies offer some type of affiliate marketing, it’s a reputable way of earning and an accepted practice generating millions of dollars in sales and commissions. We realized very early on, that affiliate marketing is not an industry going away, it’s one that is growing exponentially. We saw this as an opportunity for Worldprofit to service the needs of Affiliate marketers. We ourselves offer an Affiliate marketing program, but importantly we wanted to make sure our Members could use our services, software, traffic and advertising to promote any and all their affiliate programs. We wanted to be the platform where affiliate marketers could get everything they need to grow their online income, all in one place at Worldprofit. In the last few years we have focused on increasing the number of resources available to our Members. An important part of this is providing training in marketing, and assistance in using the specialized services proprietary to Worldprofit. Our focus has been on further expanding our online training program, enhancing our weekly interactive training, and increasing customer service to better meet the needs of our growing Membership. I developed the Home Business Bootcamp Training program over a decade ago to help people learn the skills they need to build their business, with changes in technology this training must continually be updated and integrated to incorporate new innovations, strategies, social media and more. Affiliate marketing is easy to do. What’s difficult for most is how to build affiliate marketing in it’s simplest form, into an actual professional online business that generates consistent growing income. People are attracted to affiliate marketing because anyone can do it from the comfort of their home, laptop, tablet or phone. Where people get stuck and need help is with the actual business do’s and don’ts. Operating and growing your own online business can be tough, it’s easy to get frustrated and give up if you aren’t sure what you’re doing. It’s for this reason, that in addition to the online self-paced bootcamp lessons, I personally conduct a weekly LIVE interactive training program. It gives our Members the opportunity to ask questions, request demonstrations and be part of our home business community of people helping people. I may be CEO now, but I have no plans to give up the hands on training and personalization that has made Worldprofit so unique and long lasting. I’m a Software Engineer, and have created much of the software and special resources available so providing this training keeps me connected with our Members. I really enjoy it and by listening to the needs of our Members, I can tweak existing resources and create more software as technology evolves.
Interviewer: George, what do you see or have planned for the future for Worldprofit?
George: The future is bright! I see even more companies “affiliatize” their products to expand their market reach to tap into the global reach affiliate marketing provides. I see more people worldwide recognizing that affiliate marketing is a powerful way to earn extra money from multiple reputable sources. My vision is for Worldprofit to continue to provide affiliate marketers with the tools, resources and training they need to grow their own online business. Our unique, comprehensive platform is built on supporting business owners. Our Members have come to rely on Worldprofit for trusted traffic, personalized training, proven effective tools and so importantly – help when needed. Our goal is to assist people to literally change their lives by teaching them how to grow their own successful, profitable online portfolio of website properties that generates income for years to come. People are now far more familiar with websites, blogging, videos, social media – we teach how to turn these tools into profitable sources of income. Consumers have become more savvy, they recognize value and can better filter out the hype. They want value and substance not fluff and false promise. As the Affiliate Marketing industry grows, people will always need traffic, training and expert support to achieve their business goals, Worldprofit plans to continue to be the best possible source for this market. We enjoy a symbiotic relationship with our Members, when they succeed, so do we!
If we take a hundred people who graduate from college or university and we follow them through their career, The 45 year plan, at the end of their career here is what happens to them:
• 29% are Dead• 63% depend on family or state (Dead broke)
,• 4% are well off (Can meet their needs and don’t need charity) • 3% still working, Only 1% are wealthy (Living the lifestyle of their dreams) <———Only 1%
This is the system we are living in right now by concluded market research. This economy is broken! Why is that the case? We have a University system that teaches you how to be a worker drone in the collective! You go to school and get an education, then you get a job and work in the 45 year plan and then you retire and live your golden years depending on other people. What a wonderful concept!
107 million people work for
85 million of them are unhappy
with their jobs
Are you one of them?
We live in a capitalist society, which means ONLY the big dogs eat! If you look at the corporate structure at your job, it is set up in a pyramid structure. CEO at the top (99.9% of the time you will never become CEO), they hire the VP, they hire the area manager, who hires the district manager, who hires supervisors, who hires new employees. Ask yourself, have you ever seen a Lamborghini in rush hour traffic?
Notice the average person, gets up at 8 o’ clock, just like they taught you for middle school, elementary and high school. They tell you when to eat lunch, when to go on break. The average person goes to work from 9 to 5, Mon-Fri, fight traffic in the morning, fight traffic on their way home, come home, eat, watch tv, go to sleep only to do the same thing for 40 years and they retire with nothing. Don’t believe me, go to Wal-Mart, Meijer, or K-Mart at night time, what do you see, old people claiming to be retired greeting at the door because their money ran out and they had to go back to work. I know I don’t want to work until I’m 65. What about you? Really 71 now. Social Security is going to be gone for us. Baby boomers are retiring. If each baby boomer retired today, the government would owe them 72 trillion dollars. Wow. They are saying we will work until we are 71. What is the purpose of going on vacation is you are hunchback and can barely move?
401K is a joke because most people can’t max it out. So what happens if that person lives to be 86. They will be living off $7,000 a year when they are used to making $40-$60,000. You have to pay attention. Why isn’t this taught in school? Because they government has to survive. It didn’t work for my parents, their parents, my friend’s parents. Don’t live average. The government will use you like a robot.
Look at school system, the average student probably pays $4-7,000 a semester. Not to mention books, then they tell you that edition is not being used anymore, so you have no refund. When you come out of school, you are in debt. Most people spend their whole life paying that debt off, not to mention the interest on it! Don’t forget about parking fees, food. College and the school system is a business. Pyramid shaped as well. President, VP, dean, department heads, professors, then the students at the bottom. It is a system, and we have been tricked. We have been programmed not to dream big. “Don’t get your hopes high” (Are your hopes supposed to be low). “Too good to be true”, “Why are you so happy?”
Even the government. President at the top, VP under him, congress, senate, state government, municipal then the taxpayers at the bottom. Ever wonder why Rich people get tax benefits and poor/middle class people don’t? Poor people say get a safe secure job. Rich people say build a business.

“This list is the work of Charles J. Sykes, author of the 1996 book Dumbing Down Our Kids: Why American Children Feel Good About Themselves But Can’t Read, Write, Or Add. (Sykes’ list was published in numerous newspapers, although it did not appear in his 1996 book. It did, however, form the meat of Sykes’ 2007 book, 50 Rules Kids Won’t Learn in School: Real-World Antidotes to Feel-Good Education.)” Aha! The truth will out!
Well — finally — what are these (actually 14) rules kids won’t learn? Actually they are quite helpful and worthy for both parents and (especially high school) kids to absorb. Here they are:
Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teen-ager uses the phrase “It’s not fair” 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule No. 1.
Rule No. 2: The real world won’t care as much about your self-esteem as much as your school does. It’ll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. This may come as a shock. Usually, when inflated self-esteem meets reality, kids complain that it’s not fair. (See Rule No. 1)
Rule No. 3: Sorry, you won’t make $40,000 a year right out of high school. And you won’t be a vice president or have a car phone either. You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn’t have a Gap label.
Rule No. 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait ’til you get a boss. He doesn’t have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he’s not going to ask you how you feel about it.
Rule No. 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren’t embarrassed making minimum wage either. They would have been embarrassed to sit around talking about Kurt Cobain all weekend.
Rule No. 6: It’s not your parents’ fault. If you screw up, you are responsible. This is the flip side of “It’s my life,” and “You’re not the boss of me,” and other eloquent proclamations of your generation. When you turn 18, it’s on your dime. Don’t whine about it, or you’ll sound like a baby boomer.
Rule No. 7: Before you were born your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning up your room and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. And by the way, before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your bedroom.
Rule No. 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn’t. In some schools, they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. Failing grades have been abolished and class valedictorians scrapped, lest anyone’s feelings be hurt. Effort is as important as results. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. (See Rule No. 1, Rule No. 2 and Rule No. 4.)
Rule No. 9: Life is not divided into semesters, and you don’t get summers off. Not even Easter break. They expect you to show up every day. For eight hours. And you don’t get a new life every 10 weeks. It just goes on and on. While we’re at it, very few jobs are interested in fostering your self-expression or helping you find yourself. Fewer still lead to self-realization. (See Rule No. 1 and Rule No. 2.)
Rule No. 10: Television is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom. Your problems will not all be solved in 30 minutes, minus time for commercials. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop to go to jobs. Your friends will not be as perky or pliable as Jennifer Aniston.
Rule No. 11: Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could.
Rule No. 12: Smoking does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you’re out cruising, watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That’s what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for “expressing yourself” with purple hair and/or pierced body parts.
Rule No. 13: You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven’t seen one of your peers at room temperature lately.
Rule No. 14: Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school’s a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you’ll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You’re welcome.
Great stuff, eh? I might add a Rule No. 15: “Believe less than half of what you read on the Internet and even less of what you see. The integrity you save may be your own.” Moms and Dads, feel free to pass Sykes’ Rules along to your children. They would be great college prep material.
by Dr. Jeffrey Lant
I’ve taught marketing for more years than I care
to remember. The biggest challenge is getting
students to understand how marketing works.
What is it? Why do you need it? How do you get
the biggest return?
To answer these questions, I came up with
a simple image that works wonders: YOUR
money is in THEIR pocket. Do you want it to
stay there… or do you want to get the funds
into YOUR pocket?
Light bulbs start going on around the class
room as one student after another “gets it.”
Of course they want to get their money out of
that pocket. We’re ALL clear on that. The
discussion then shifts to how to get it out…
and how to do it FAAAST!
The Pivotal Role Of The Offer
“Try this,” I say to the class: walk up to someone
on the street and ask them for $50. Will you
get it? Unlikely. Instead be prepared for dirty
looks and worse. “Asking,” I say, “ain’t getting.”
The students nod their heads knowingly. They’ve
been there… done that.
“Ok,” I say. You guys get this. Then why don’t these
folks, at which I show them one marketing
communication after another (Yellow Pages ad,
brochure, direct mail letter, etc.) where supposedly
savvy business people spent good money doing
nothing more than saying “Here we are, here’s
what we have.”
“That,” I say “is not marketing. It’s just telling…
not selling.” If you want to make MONEY… YOU
must motivate people to part with the bucks.
Offers Get People To Move
What gets people to buy is offers, offers, and
more offers… saying, in effect, I’m prepared
to give you
* and this
* and this
IF and ONLY IF you take action now to
get what I’m selling.
“What,” I ask the class, “is more likely to get
you to respond: just saying here I am, here’s what
I do.” OR saying
“I’ll give you one hour free for every three hours
of my service you book.”
All knowing, the students say “people will act faster
if you give them MORE.” Now it’s my turn to nod
sagely. “Bingo,” sez I.
Brain storm offers all the time… because you will
need an offer EVERY day you want to empty
prospects’ pockets and move that money
I ask the students what days they want to profit
in their businesses. They look quizzical: “Well,
EVERY day,” they say.
Another “Bingo” from me.
“So, if you want to make money EVERY day…
then when do you need to make offers?”
ANOTHER “Aha!” moment for my budding
marketing masters. The idea is beginning to
sink in that EVERY day you want to move money
from your prospects’ pockets is a day you must
“Make offers,” I say, “every day you want to
make money.” And I write “Money means daily
offers” on the chalk board.
Open A “Swipe File”
Where can you find marketing intelligence, great
offers that produce the bucks? In the marketing
communications of people who live or die by marketing.
And where do you find these? Everywhere!
If you want to move money from other people’s
pockets into yours, start collecting and studying
marketing communications. Open a “swipe file,”
and pop in marketing communications that work.
Make this a daily endeavor. When you see ads
that work for others, adapt the copy for your
Marketing is like breathing. Stop doing it and
you die. Finish any day by selecting the offer
you’ll use tomorrow. Start each day by reviewing
how well yesterday’s offer pulled. Note these
results for future reference; winning ads should
be repeated; ads that wilted must die.
One more thing: see marketing as a great game,
a game that takes everything you’ve got. Embrace it!
Enjoy it! If you don’t, your money will stay in THEIR
pocket and that’s just not acceptable!
