“YOU SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION.” DAINTY STEPS AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

Picture

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant

You know John Lennon’s famous song, don’t you (1968)? Everyone does. “You say you want a revolution, well you know, we all want to change the world…” but at Harvard, not too fast. Literally word by patient word.

The issue at the World’s Greatest University is this. The alma mater of the University, “Fair Harvard”, was written in 1836. It is to be sure a sluggish hymn, played to the dewy-eyed undergraduates when they arrive, and to the misty-eyed when they graduate… when they take the Harvard brand into the real word.

The do-gooders have got the usual bee in their bonnets. They want to change the last line, which reads “Till the stock of the Puritans die.” This implies, so say advocates for change, that when the last Puritan dies, Harvard will cease to be the notable institution it has been for centuries.

So important is this issue, the President of Harvard Drew Faust has created a commission titled Presidential Task Force on Inclusion and Belonging. This commission is currently in the midst of removing the Puritans and entering the diverse and nonjudgmental world of their imagining and constant search.

This commission, like all kangaroo courts, is not asking the University community whether they wish to continue with an historic song, known by every Harvard student and alumnus… no, they’ve already decided that the line about the Puritans must go.

They’ve appointed themselves the re-lyricing folks. They don’t like the line, they don’t want anyone else to like the line, and they certainly don’t want to ask the University community whether it wants to keep the line. Democracy, you see, is for other people, not Harvard poohbahs.

So far, these pocket revolutionaries have announced that all the University community is invited to participate in changing the last line of the alma mater to bring it into contemporary usage… never mind that the song in question has been on the lips of virtually every Harvard student who matriculated since 1836. “What’s wrong is wrong,” they say. And truth must prevail against all comers.

This situation is tailor made for Voltaire (1694-1778), “History is a pack of lies… the living play on the dead.” Time and other precious resources are being utilized this very minute to “improve” what needs no improvement. But what is worse, is that these people, with all their exalted academic titles and colorful gowns, are dealing with literally one word. At this rate, it will take a millennium for these valued academics to fulfill their wishing. Yes, so far, their one “achievement” is proclaiming a contest in two parts.

Part one: a new, more “correct” and contemporary wording. And also, even more extraordinary, to select new music, including such suggestions as hip-hop and electronic. Now our lucky graduates can move the committee so that at future graduation ceremonies, new students can bugaloo, or perhaps reggae. Never let us ask what is appropriate for the ceremony, let us only inquire whether every strain of music has been given the chance to modernize the high festivities and events which characterize the life of a great university.

In addition, they have created a website called the “solution space”, which is designed to circulate their fatuous and jejune views.

But now I have something important to say to this committee and to the University community. If the goal is to diminish the reputation of the Puritans, then they are certainly going about this matter completely incorrectly. Sixty people were appointed by the president to this commission. Sixty people for one word… Puritans.

However I am like Louis Antoine de Saint-Just (1767-1794), the “Angel of Death” of this situation… the beautiful revolutionary. He changed the debate for the direction of the French Revolution in one sentence… that “One cannot reign innocently: the insanity of doing so is evident”. And on this basis, they guillotined his Most Christian Majesty, Louis XVI. It is now time to strike a blow for this nonjudgmental, diverse, all inclusive revolution. To take it out of the hands of people who think removing a single word is triumph, and to get to the heart of the matter.

That single word – Puritans – shows us that we remain enthralled to our ancient heritage when so much of this palaver does not enhance the debate.

“J’accuse…!”

In 1898, Emile Zola wrote perhaps the most famous declaration ever written, “J’accuse…!”, where he changed the debate on the Dreyfus Affair (1894), a shameful exhibition of the abuse of power. But Zola and his unforgettable language changed a culture, and aroused a great nation. Now it is time to do this with Harvard, a name universally known, a destination that thousands of young people all over the world chart from an early day, and go to bed every night in hopeful expectation that they may have the great good fortune of going to Harvard and being a part of its community.

Towards this end, I suggest with complete humility this truly new idea: the name Harvard must be stripped off the University. I am not being facetious, or cantankerous, or quarrelsome; I am presenting the solution to the problem of diversity and inclusion.

Let us commence by looking at who this John Harvard was and remember that this is the man who we revere and venerate as a founder and benefactor of the great University and its worldwide reputation and dealings.

John Harvard was born in 1607, and died in 1638, just 31 and a half years old. He bequeathed half his extensive property (over $2 million dollars in today’s currency) and a great collection of his books. Since 1636, no one has bothered to go beyond the resource giver and look at his views, prejudices, and positions which so embarrass us today.

In a way, of course, the University was enormously fortunate that so little is known about John Harvard, and even better that virtually all the books that he donated to Harvard, most of them on theological subjects, were destroyed in a fire in 1764. These books would have told us some inconvenient truths about this man, his mission, and what he wanted for Harvard.

Fortunately, the Puritans were epistolary masters, and fastidious diary keepers. If we cannot see into the heart of John Harvard, we can learn a great deal about how he thought by examining places and people he engaged with. At the commencement, the members of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, themselves Puritans, said in their remarks upon accepting his bequest that “He is a Godly gentleman”, in other words that he was a great and good Puritan, and they like him more because they all agreed.

Here are some things which in their eyes made all Puritans great, including John Harvard.

1) They condemned to eternal damnation and the fires of Hell anyone who was not saved. Since only Puritans could be saved, it was a select group. John Harvard was part of it, and he participated in the strongest possible measures to exile and remove those who did not concur with his select opinion.

2) The Puritans were anti-Roman Catholic. The Bishop of Rome was their particular nemesis. Within Puritan communities, Roman Catholic clergy and missionaries were all evil and could be literally thrown off the land and killed because they chose to follow God in their way, which no Puritan could ever allow.

3) They were anti The Church of England. It had not purified itself of Roman influence, and as such was anathema.

4) They opposed Quakers and Baptists, several of whom were hung by the neck until dead… because they chose their way of godliness, and the Puritans could never agree. Tolerance was not their metier.

5) They oppressed women. Running through the Puritan literature, adhered to by John Harvard, women were to be kept for breeding and cleaning… and of course to provide ongoing ecstasy upon demand to their lord and master. John Harvard believed this, because every Puritan believed it.

6) John Harvard believed as every Puritan believed in demons. He along with other Puritans was confident that the demons could do most anything to hurt and harm, malign and destroy any life… and therefore the strongest possible response was not only necessary, but essential. And so other colonists went to the stake, so they might expiate their sins in the fiery flames of Hell and eternal damnation.

The Puritans did not believe in changing their treasured opinions. Those who advocated change were wrong now, wrong then, and wrong forever. They did not need committees of the well meaning, they had God, and He was sufficient. The sad truth of this matter is that it is the very paucity of information about John Harvard and his views that have made him such an attractive founder. There is no opposition to John Harvard because so very little is known about him.

It is altogether fitting and proper that the famous statue in Harvard Yard is not of John Harvard at all, but someone quite different. And so, I charge you Danielle Allen, University Professor, Co-Chair of this commission, and all your 60 members, to drop the petty crusade against a single word and to go to the heart of the matter.

Change the name of the University. Remove it from every degree. Remove it, root and branch, from everything touched by the name John Harvard. Your committee members may well blanch at this startling and long overdue recommendation. If you truly want diversity and inclusiveness you can have it.

Of course some narrow minded people will say things like “They don’t care about inclusiveness and diversity. They didn’t come to Harvard for that, but for degrees which lift them high and above others who attended other, less rigorous educational institutions.”

The very name John Harvard and everything that is known about him and his Puritan colleagues demands that it be excluded from every aspect of the University and its history. And to those who complain I say this: the motto of this great institution is still Veritas; so cease focusing on the insignificant, and focus instead on cleansing Harvard of Harvard.

“You say you’ll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead”

The 5 Basics for Building an Online Business That Actually Makes Money

Hello, My name is Howard Martell, AKA HOMEPROFITCOACH IN LLCConsultant and Business Coach.

I want to share some important information with you today in reference on how to properly leverage the correct tools online for maximize traffic exposure.

A little about myself been marketing for over 24 years online, and wasn’t until left my first career serving The Great Republic in the US Navy for 20 years as Cyber security professional that really realized what being a professional marketer and coach entailed.

My story is short and sweet hard working eager online marketer who needed assistance with how to properly build a list of solid clients globally and capture resultant sales.

In 2009 December one of my good marketing friends kept telling me about Worldprofit, and eventually signed in as a free associate and that same day joined as Silver Member.

Some of the tips I will provide can be utilized in any business:

With the boom of the Internet and social media has arisen a new category of entrepreneurship. Successful entrepreneurs such as Mark Cuban, Elon Musk, and Peter Thiel got their start with online businesses. An online business offers an unparalleled opportunity to run a business worldwide with only a laptop and Internet connection.

Starting and growing an online business, however, is easier said than done. Today, 2.5 billion people log onto the Internet. This is good in the sense of the opportunity for income, but negative in the sense that an online business has become a modern day gold rush.

Everywhere you look a new “guru” or “expert” who offers their cheat sheet or course on how they made “seven-figures” in one year. Logging into your Facebook account can be downright depressing with all the over-hyped ads. Choosing whom to learn from can be just as hard as starting an online business.

Here are five simple steps to making money from a dream or an idea you have and enjoy. You don’t need the gurus to start or grow a business that will free you to make money on your terms.

1. Focus.

When I say focus, the first thought that comes to your mind is probably “niche.” While figuring out a profitable niche is important, it’s not the end all be all. Focus means figuring out who you want to serve and how you will deliver value to that group.

It means you stop following the gurus and focus on what will help you where you are. There is an abundance of free information online, almost too much. Many entrepreneurs fall victim to information overload. I’m guessing that if you applied 10 percent of the knowledge you currently have, you would make progress building your business. Turn off the constant learning and focus on 20 percent strategies. Use a service like Unroll.me to unsubscribe from unnecessary emails lists that take all your time.

2. Build an audience.

This is where many businesses miss the mark. You put together a beautiful website with all the right plugins, widgets and opt-in boxes. You follow all the steps, but the money doesn’t come because you have no audience.

There are many ways to build an audience and quickly:

  • Be a guest on a podcast. Every morning, Radio Guest List will deliver to your inbox a list of shows looking for your expertise.
  • Guest post on blogs. There are blogs that get millions of visitors each month. In 2012, I guest posted on 50 blogs that brought half a million visitors to my website.
  • Get exposure from large author sites. If you can be interviewed or write for sites like Entrepreneur or the Huffington Post, you get exposure to millions of potential leads and customers. Writing for these websites builds authority, grows your social media presence and leads to sales. Here is a podcast episode that walks you through how to do this.

3. Develop a monetization plan.

After you’ve started to get exposure, it’s time to implement your plan to generate income.  Your website/blog needs a content strategy that aligns with a promotion schedule. It shocks me how many coaching clients come to me without an organized plan to generate revenue. Plan what products and services you will be offering your customers. Use your exposure and content plan to sell premium offerings and build your business.

4. Test and refine.

Once you have a plan and have implemented it, study what works and what doesn’t. There is a lot of advice online, but nothing beats good old fashion testing. Try different offers, bundle various products and services, run sales from time-to-time. Once you have an offering that takes off, run it every 30 days. Refine your process and improve the parts of your plan that aren’t working.

5. Launch and scale.

By this point, you will have built “1,000 true fans” and a business that’s ripe for growth. Always launch with a bang when your promotions hit at the end of each month or quarter. This means you have affiliate partners, joint partnerships through webinars and launch bonuses. Each launch should produce serious revenue and momentum for your business. From that point, it’s a matter of reinvesting and scaling.

Starting and growing an online business is not easy. There is a lot of competition talking about the same topics as you. It takes time and tremendous focus. It takes beating self-limiting beliefs and the haters. It’s hard, but the lifestyle of true freedom it creates is priceless.

ASK THE HOMEPROFITCOACH INC LLC What is Energy Vampire and why to stay as far away from them in your home business.

Hello, My name is Howard Martell, AKA HOMEPROFITCOACH IN LLC Consultant and Business Coach.

Let’s first look at what Energy Vampire is in the dictionary: energy vampire

someone who steals or trys to bring down your positive energy.

That energy vampire is totally trying to stress me out today.

Energy vampire

An energy vampire or an energy sucker is a person who seems to suck (NOT as a metaphore but as a true action) the energy of other people. This means, he has this unusual ability to draw energy from the people around him.
If you know a person who is NEVER tired, always friendly and active, and after being in his presence for a few hours you feel unusually weak and have a will to get away from the person as soon as possible, than he can be called an energy vampire.

This guy, Joe, really is an energy vampire. In his presence, really soon we all were so tired and sleepy we couldn’t stand on our feet, but he still kept dancing, lauging and drinking for hours, as if it was 10 in the morning and not 2:30 AM.

Energy Vampire

A person or couple that just sucks the energy out of a room or from a conversation.

You: Did you see Bob at the party yesterday?
Friend: Yes, I left exhausted. Please let me know if the future if he is going to be at one of your parties. He’s such an energy vampire.

Energy Vampire

An energy vampire is an individual or a small group of like minded people who have the unique ability to suck the energy from the room.
Almost all people encounter energy vampires in their life but they are mistaken to be ‘bitches’ and ‘dicks’.

Energy vampire numbers are often highest in the education system

Teacher ‘stop talking and listen, listen good! You are all to stay behind after the bell so that we can catch up on the math work you all are failing’

No that you know the official meaning of energy vampire is this someone who you really want to be on your winning team.  As progressed over the years of learning proven places where real people globally have come  from and got to learn quickly who are prospects that seem serious. I have to say when it is all said and done they want to have their hand held and not do anything. We then have the winners the ones who WHY is bigger than their own being!
Fear is the common denominator in these individuals, and you must learn to protect yourself from their negative influences. The five personality types are called ethereal, insecure, paranoid, passive-aggressive, and robotic.

The Paranoid Type

Betrayal is the main issue with a paranoid type. Their karmic theme in past lives has possibly been that of warrior-like behavior, self-sacrifice, and victory in their battles. As a results of their experiences, they learned that there were enemies in the world who betrayed and possibly killed them in several incarnations.

Paranoid types are soldiers still trying to win a war that no longer exists against an enemy that has long since perished. They do not trust anyone.  Everyone is their enemy and life is their battleground. Fear is everywhere and an ingrained part of their personality makeup.

Their energy fields tend to be more highly charged on the upper half of their body. They are especially fearful and distrustful of members of the opposite sex. Aggression is the most common response to the world from a paranoid type. This aggression takes the form of physical behavior and energy projections to anyone in their path.

Paranoid types constantly pick fights. They are seductive, but are incapable of long-term relationships. This person expects all others to betray them, and will assist in setting up others for this betrayal. A paranoid may initiate a betrayal as a preemptory strike.

To lose for a paranoid is to admit that they are bad. This is intolerable, so these people must win at any cost. They are hard workers, obsessive-compulsive, and are usually quite healthy physically. There is never enough time for them to accomplish their various goals.

Paranoid types insist you agree with their often-distorted view of the world. In reality, they want you to argue with them. This way they can win the argument and prove to themselves that they are good and you are bad.

Never argue with this person. Refrain from making eye contact with them. Lower and soften your voice when you speak to them, and change the topic to something pleasant.
Have you ever faced negative people before? Wait — who am I kidding? Of course you have! I know I have. Unless you live in a cocoon, all of us have probably encountered at least one or two negative person in our life. Negative people are everywhere, be it in our workplace, in social circles, or sometimes our family.

The challenge with dealing with negative people is that interactions with them tend to be draining. No matter what you say, they always have a negative opinion to offer. When something positive happens, they are quick to excuse that as a one-off or point out the black lining to the situation. When they have a problem, they prefer to victimize and complain, rather than work out a solution.

To negative people, life sucks.

While we sometimes associate critical people as negative people, I want to highlight that they’re not always the same. Critical people have a tendency to criticize, at times even insult, others. Critical people can be sarcastic and tactless, often stepping on people’s toes. On the other hand, negative people may not necessarily be critical toward others. What they carry is a pessimistic and self-defeatist attitude toward life.

Negative People as Energy Vampires

I like to refer to negative people as energy vampires.

Two reasons why

  1. Like vampires, negative people are incapable of generating positive energy. Hence they feed off the energy of others.
  1. Vampires convert living beings into their kind because they feel lonely living in solitude. Similarly, negative people tend to drag people down into negativity too. After all, misery loves company.

Actually, all of us have a connection with the universe that brings us unlimited (positive) energy. Because negative people are blocked in their connection to this source, they are constantly in an energy deficit, which leads to them to drain others of their energy. The more negative people can even leave you with headaches or mild dizziness — these are your king/queen vampires.

On the other hand, positive people are in tune with their inner energy sources. Their energy flows outwards, spreading goodness and warmth to people around them. It’s like a fountain of overflowing water.  This is why you feel upbeat and energetic when around positive people — they have a magnetic quality that draws people in automatically. Great leaders, iconic figures and some celebrities have this quality that allows them to attract large masses of people. When

I was in my previous company, there were numerous leaders in the management who exuded such qualities – it was always liberating being around them.

If you can first prequalify your prospects you bring in using customized landing pages. This serves two purposes one is to be able to provide further information and or send customized email out to see how serious this person is about success on the internet.

I prefer to ask pre-qualfying questions if a prospect calls me for one of my FREE marketing consults and limit the conversation to 10-15 minutes. I get to know them by asking open ended questions like why do you want to succeed online other than the money answer. Explain to them how my services can fit into their needs by using analogy of there current business model. I you the show ask tell method. Offer to send them a free marketing ebook as thank you for taking my offer for assistance serious. Tell them the benefits of being a successful business owner online and share my experience with not only making money, but helping build a solid group of like-minded business partners. Last I provide them a link to a resource used for 25 years when comes down to any of the taxable home business deductions we business owners are able to receive.

Confused By The World Of Web Hosting Follow This Solid Advice

Once you obtain a domain name, the next step is to find a host for your website. If you’re like many people in this situation, you might not know much the process. What things do you try to look for in terms of web hosting companies? Do you know how to determine their reliability? This article is the perfect starting point, and the advice below can set you on your way to understanding everything you need to know to choose the perfect host for your website.
When choosing a web hosting package, you need to make sure you get the right amount of disk space. When calculating the amount of disk space needed, you need to think of things like HTML files, graphics, scripts, and multi-media content. If you site uses up too much disk space, you will either be charged more money or the host can shut your site down.
Call the customer service number and ask about SSL certification and shopping carts. If the technicians are helpful, you have found a web host that understands e-commerce and will be able to meet your needs. On the other hand, if no one is able to answer your technical questions, look for a different host.

The web hosting service that you decide to utilize should have easily accessible customer support with fast response times. This is important because once you begin running your website, you might realize that you require more than is offered in your package. For example, if your website has a huge boost in traffic that is beyond your bandwidth limits, you should be able to contact your web host and immediately obtain more bandwidth. If it takes over a week for the web host to respond to your request, and if your website goes offline in the meantime, this could have lasting negative consequences.
When you have chosen a web host, make sure to have monthly payments instead of paying a lot in advance. It is impossible to know for certain what will happen to either your website or your web host in the future. You may lose money if your host’s service declines, it closes altogether or your website becomes larger than what the host is designed to handle.
If you are considering a free web hosting service, be careful. Make sure to back up everything that you want to keep, because free hosts don’t usually provide any sort of backup service. Remember, you get what you pay for. You risk losing your files entirely. If that happens, there is not much you can do about it.
As is obvious by now, getting a website up and running takes more than just choosing a catchy domain name, you need a good web hosting company, for starters. Knowing where to start and what to watch out for in choosing a hosting provider is a great first step towards getting your site up and running. Use the advice from this article to quickly get your site running.

Choosing A Web Host Is Simple With These Tips

Do you want to set up a site which allows you to send emails to customers automatically? Well, you can, if you choose the right web hosting service. Keep reading to find out what sets web hosts apart and which features you need to run your site efficiently.
Instead of finding a great web hosting company, start your own web hosting company to service your own needs. This can provide many benefits including secondary income and free web hosting if your business takes off. This is a great way to think like an entrepreneur, and make some money instead of paying for web hosting.
Always have a backup plan for web hosting providers. In the event that you experience significant and ongoing problems with your hosting service, you will want to have an alternate already researched. If you are without service for more than a day, start immediately putting your backup plan into action. This will save you the potential for even longer delays if your provider has serious problems.
A good web hosting service should bill you professionally. You should be able to log in with a username and password to have access to your account balance and make secured payments. If you have to send PayPal payments every months without getting account statements, you are not dealing with a serious web hosting service.
Think long and hard before deciding that you want to launch your own web hosting service. This can seem tempting, until you realize that you will likely spend inordinate amounts of time dealing with this service, rather than focusing on the business that you already have. Use the expertise of those who have been doing it for years, and pay them what they are worth.
Read the terms of service when dealing with a web host who offers “unlimited” services. Many times web hosts will offer unlimited bandwidth or sometimes hard disk space. Read the terms carefully, as they may reserve the right to ask you to upgrade your plan, if you are a higher profile customer, that has increased usage.
When you are choosing a web hosting company, it is important that you rely on more than just one or two pieces of advice on a recommendation. Many recommendations are from people who haven’t even experienced the web hosting company that they are recommending. Choose wisely, do your research, and know many things about the company that you choose.
If you’re going to use a free web host, make sure that you know all of the restrictions about site content, as different hosts have different rules about what you can post, especially in the areas of music or video, as streaming those can take up bandwidth. If you know the rules, you won’t be in for any surprises.
As you’ve seen, web hosting companies offer different things that can fit your needs and maximize your service. Use the tips above to find the right hosting company and get ready to take your online business to the next level.

STEP 6: Establish business e-mail account list.

STEP 7: Put your contact information on your website.

STEP 8: Employ or engineer word-of-mouth advertising on blogs, feedback on other people’s blogs, promotions, et cetera.

Word of Advise: Try to avoid Internet scams if you are getting started with a internet based business. Many work-from-home opportunities advertised over the internet are scams and will try to charge you fees. Do not purchase expensive kits, books, or systems designed to make money. If they feature videos of people with expensive homes, cars, and images of “real checks” by the owner, do not buy into the scam.

That said, there a few reputable companies online that will pay you, although generally not in very high wages. Better to start your own business and create your own opportunities!

Tips On What To Avoid With Your Internet Business

  • Since a feeling of isolation can come from working online, make certain to take breaks and get out of the house often.
  • Keep your working hours within reasonable limits. If your business grows to big too handle by yourself, hire an employee.
  • Allowing interruptions is not wise. Inform everyone in the family of your working hours and do not allow interruptions to invade those hours.
  • Establish a clear and organized work space. No matter how small your home is, there must be an established area for work space. Do not mix your home stuff with your work stuff. Keep it organized for success.
  • Not creating a schedule is like driving without directions to your intended destination. A schedule is a necessary component of successful online businesses.

God Bless,

Are you looking to create an online presence where people follow you on a daily basis? The content you’ll find here will be perfect for you if you’re looking to better your blog. This guide will cover great advice that you can use in creating a blog and you will get the popularity level that you desire.
Ensure that you are posting very often in the blogs that you operate. At the minimum, you should aim to post one time on each blog every single day during the weekdays. Of course, posting more is always welcome. This shows your visitors that you are a very active blogger, which will make them more prone to keep visiting your blogs.
A key to a successful blog is to blog often. Many bloggers will start by posting once a week, or once a day, and then fail to continue the frequent updates. Even if readers love your blog, they’ll lose interest if they have to wait a long time for updates. A good rule of thumb is to create new blogs weekly and send out email updates.
Since blogging is on a personal level you should avoid writing formally. You should still write in a professional manner and use proper grammar. Your readers will be able to relate to you more when you are writing to them in a casual way and will continue reading your blogs.
Utilizing social media websites is a great way to generate interest and increase traffic to your blog. You can use Twitter and Facebook to inform readers of new blog articles which they can then share with their friends. These websites also serve as a way to interact with your readers, and find out what they are interested in. Tailor your blog updates to their interests.
If you are going to blog, you need to make sure you choose a niche or market that you are passionate about. There are plenty of blogs out there, and there are just as many topics to choose from. Stay specific, and choose a blogging subject that you can create a successful blog with.
Commenting on other blogs is one of the best ways to generate traffic to your blog. If you read an interesting article, write a compelling comment that offers a unique perspective. Include a link to your blog. The people who read your comment will likely want to read more of what you have to say, and will visit your blog.
Your blog goes much further than just your posts. It may look like just a collection of various articles, but it’s so much more. To be a successful blogger, your blog needs a presence. This is created by your posts and comments, both on your blog and other online sites.
With all that you now understand about blogging and how it can help you, you should now have a strategy in mind for how you want to go about blogging in the future. Just take into consideration that it takes time to truly establish a blog with the level of success you hope to achieve.

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk’… Saturday night fever… stayin’ alive. It’s all right, it’s ok. Thanksgiving, 2013. And I just can’t lose.

by Dr. Jeffrey Lant.
Author’s program note. It is 5:19 a.m. Still dark outside… so cold… rainy to boot.
My body has found new ways to display its rainbow of black, yellow, purple and green manifestations, all lurid, that take over when it wants me to feel their power. I can’t bend down without wincing… I can’t get up without wincing, but I am happy, ridiculously happy.
You see I have so dodged a bullet that hobbling though I am seems like winning a “God loves you” award. And that, I confess, puts tears in my eye… only that these are tears of wistful gratitude… just in time for Thanksgiving Day, when I shall have the certain use for them. Here’s how it happened…
It started, developed, and ended within the concise boundaries of a single minute, enough time, more than enough, for any injury or mishap you could name. Despite the fact that I was the principal of the tale, I can tell you almost nothing about what happened and that concerns me, for I am ever and acutely on the look-out for signs I am losing my marbles something all senior citizens do (and admit only with the utmost resistance).
I cannot even tell you in detail just what the affected area looks like, not even if I look over my shoulder in the pert come-hither fashion made famous by Betty Grable in the provocative World War II poster that constituted her curvaceous bit toward victory.
Thus when I asked a friend to see what I could not, dropping trousers in approved prep-school fashion, all he said was “ou la la”, but whether for the colorful designs already in place, the (“for your age, Dr. Lant”) pristine flesh they were written on, or just to be the annoying punk he always is, I cannot say. Thus, I remain this Monday morning as uninformed on the matter as Saturday night. Of course this concerns me, too, for it is my fate, along with the millions my age or older, to spend profitless hours wondering at the latest damage we have done to ourselves.
Thus, and not just by gray hairs alone, do we gage our incursion into the byways of seniority… irked by them, most fearful of the moment that stops them forever. In the meantime, we take fervent joy from boring our colleagues witless by inflicting every detail of our latest malady on them, in exhaustive, microscopic detail, continuous, fulsome, unending, the ultimate get-even endeavor. Serves ‘em right.
And so I exercise my immemorial right to tell my story, not forgetting to digress frequently along the way, garrulous, the better to create the mind-numbing tale that will haunt my auditors forever, every single one of them thereafter crossing the street whenever they see me coming, thereby costing them the pleasure of my company. Serves ‘em right.
(Not just) once upon a time.
Have you noticed that stories beginning “once upon a time” always develop sequentially, one thing logically following another, until the princess and her gallant knight share the chaste kiss of eternity? Real life isn’t remotely like that as this story proves. In real life things go in all directions at once, hay wire, so fast you can hardly make sense of a single one. And that disturbs us humans profoundly for all that exists between us and the chaos popping around us is our frail logic and ability to filter, delete, and concentrate… and these, for most, constitute frail weapons indeed, completely inadequate to the task at hand, answering the question we most want answered: “Then what happened?”
There are several ways to handle the events commencing and ending Saturday night. I could say, and without fear of contradiction, I fell. Just that. It is short, sweet, factually accurate and entirely credible. I could say this, but if I did I wouldn’t get much of your available sympathy, would I? That only comes from the additional details I must add to ensure that you listen to me and listen well. Only these details properly told and properly contorted ensure the high degree of empathy I wish to squeeze out of you.
The objective, remember, is maximum TLC for minimum effort. All approaches and possibilities must be reviewed by this exacting standard. For instance, if you are telling the story of your fall to a member of your family renowned for their similarity to “Silent Cal” Coolidge, each word pulled out with tweezers, then you must make your case as a sullen teen-ager would, words extracted with the utmost reluctance and truculence. “Where did you go?” “Out.” “What did you do?” “Nothing”.
People who play the communications game this way treasure such challenges, always aiming for the Guinness Book of Records with their “less is more” approach. Above all else, never argue with them about anything. Each word you use increases their contempt. Instead, present your case by the apt use of silence. “How do you feel?” “Umm.” “Still hurt?” “Umm”. As Henry Ford II famously said, “Never complain. Never explain.” But do look wan, pathetic, bearing it all with the greatest possible forbearance, with frequent sighs and a tear or two when the action palls.
“Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk…”
In 1977 John Travolta and the Bee Gees showed the world, particularly its male component of adolescent years, how to make a statement just by walking down the street, cocky, arrogant, cool to the furthest degree. Their song was “Stayin’ Alive”, and it was the first thing I recalled as I lifted my bruised head off the highly polished and slick oak floor. It was not only the perfect beat (find it in any search engine and see for yourself). It was the perfect message, for my walk at the moment is anything but cocky and assured, yet it tells volumes about how I feel and am progressing.
Instead of skin tight pants and disdain, I walk gingerly through the corridors of my house as if I were square dancing, each foot ahead made possible by grabbing a chair, thereby pulling myself forward, “allemande left” This, too, is dancing… no matter how awkward…and where there is dancing, there is hope.
“Saturday night fever.”
To Travolta and company Saturday night fever meant pure unadulterated animal joy, the thrill of being in the same space as women of the female gender… the thrill of watching your closest friends fail… and the unexpected moment you got the mind-boggling kiss of your adolescence dreams, the kiss you’d remember forever. It was all new, all exciting, every last thing memorable. Then there’s my version of Saturday night fever… 101 degrees and rising faster than the body you are trying to push up and off the floor.
One minute this body is as well as it ever gets (fair to middling); the next it is heaped on the flood, sprawled, crumpled, its landing marked by loud thumps possibly (but only possibly) louder in my imagination than in reality, either way it got my full, addled attention. The fever followed instantly, eager to add its two cents worth to the unexpected concoction. Just like Travolta I gyrated, swirled, dipped and… there the similarities sharply ended for while he went down and came up, pure poetry in motion, I just went down and yelped… something no self-respecting adolescent would ever do upon pain of death. But, then, they don’t know such pains and I do…. I am feeling them right now.
“But you know, it’s all right, it’s ok. I’ll live to see another day ’cause I’m a dancing man… and I just can’t lose.” That’s why Thanksgiving this year will be so very thankful, even if I have to use my brand new cane. What an entrance it will be, abundant proof I am stayin’ alive and understand “The New York Times effect on man.”.
